"The Tales of Hoffmann" is one of the most fascinating mysteries in the history of opera. The composer Jacques Offenbach died before the premiere, leaving behind a multifaceted opera fragment in which grotesque and sinister elements from E. T. A. Hoffmann's novellas are mixed with the poet's biography to create a bizarre dream world. The characters strangely change their identities, demonic antagonists relentlessly pursue all attempts at love and life possibilities that have just arisen suddenly melt away into nothingness - it soon becomes impossible to distinguish between fiction and truth, between fiction and reality. Add to this Offenbach's marvellous music, which constantly oscillates between operetta and grand opera and invites you to listen closely.
