Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715–1769) was one of Germany’s most popular writers of his day and played a decisive role in shaping the German language. His writings were widely read and his lectures at the University of Leipzig were legendary. Goethe described Gellert’s moral teachings as the ‘foundation of German moral culture’. His fables in particular captivated readers, but he also wrote comedies, penned the first German novel and shaped the style of letter-writing for generations.
