For more than 200 years, opera houses have been frequently and variously featured in novels and novellas. The lecture introduces the opera house as a literary topos and then - on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Carl Maria von Weber's death - concentrates primarily on two novels in which performances of "Der Freischütz" are described with very different emphases: Wolfgang Schlüter's "Anmut und Gnade" (2007) and Uwe Tellkamp's Dresden novel "Der Turm. History from a Sunken Land" (2008).
